Construction Journal Entry Week of 5/2/04

5/4-6/04 I went up to the property for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.

I got a late start because I moved Gus into Foss Home to begin convalescing after his recent stroke. I arrived at the property at 4:30 PM. There was a little frog on the gate padlock under the can. I can't recognize individual frogs any better than I can recognize individual pack rats so I don't know if this little guy is the same frog as the one last year or not. In either case, it is pretty clear that they like my padlock-can hideout.

Since I had skipped lunch and because it was so late, I didn't do any work on the building. I just moved my gear in and started dinner. I didn't see any signs of Doug and Laurie visiting so if they did stop in and visit during the weekend, they didn't leave any trace.

On Wednesday I sanded all the logs that were due for another coat of varnish and I sanded the top of the old workbench. Then I planed, scraped, and gouged two more logs at Grid A and two more between Grid A and B. Then I set up a two-tier scaffold tower so I could reach the Grid B purlin. I planed and scraped the rest of the Grid B purlin between the southwest wall and the loft. Finally, I broomed off all the logs and scaffolding to be ready to varnish in the morning.

On Thursday morning, I varnished all the logs that were ready. It was pleasant work. It doesn't take much thought or attention to varnish so I just let my thoughts wander through the mysteries of life. I guess I should have paid a little more attention to my varnishing because I forgot to put another coat on the workbench top. I already had my brush cleaned out by the time I thought about it. Since varnishing that workbench is not on any critical path it really doesn't matter when I do it. No problem. I took a bunch of pictures of the building with our digital camera to see if I can't get a better picture for my business cards and for the first page of our web site. I left for home at 1:15.
