Construction Journal Entry Week of 3/11/07

3/13-15/07 I went up to the property for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.

I took Gus to the hospital again in the morning and stayed with him into the afternoon. Then I went from the hospital to the tax man to deliver our tax records. I finally got to the property at 4:30 PM. On the way in, I stopped and talked with Brad Philbrook. He was walking on the road with McComas' dog Brass and one of Brass's pups that I had not seen before. He liked my new pickup.

I got stuck in the mud in the driveway and figured it would be another opportunity to try the 4WD. I couldn't make any more progress than I could with two wheels. Either way, a good run at it worked the best. So far, I'm not impressed with 4WD.

After moving in, I went up to the cabin and sanded the three logs that were due for another coat of varnish and I scraped part of the Grid B purlin and one wall log. Then I re-built the scaffold platform so I could work lower down on the wall.

On Wednesday there was another inch of new snow on the ground. I went back to work in the cabin and got a total of five new wall logs ready for varnish and about a third of the Grid B purlin. I dismantled the scaffold, pulled the tarps out of the way, swept up the chips, and vacuumed the wall and floor. Then I brought up some sawhorses and set them up with planks so that I could reach the prepared logs in order to varnish them. I felt really good about making some significant progress in the work for a change. It is also a delight to see those ugly discolored logs turn to bright white new wood again.

On Thursday morning it was 35 degrees. It was a beautiful day. I varnished the eight wall logs and about a third of the Grid B purlin. I left for home at 1:00 hating to leave, as usual.
