4/10-12/07 I went up to the property for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.
I arrived at 12:50. On the way in I noticed that the rocks at the outcropping on the road looked different. I went over to look and saw that the great huge boulder that used to be propped up on a couple other rocks was now flat on the ground. It looked like someone has been in there taking more rocks. I hope they don't tear any more of that cliff down.
After moving in and having lunch, I went to work and sanded the B2 PSL and the part of the Grid B purlin that was due for another coat of varnish. Then I cut and fit the molding to trim the inside of the last window in the building. Another milestone! That window really looks nice.
I brought a plug with me in order to repair a long light cord. I had figured the problem was in the old plug. After replacing the plug, I found that the cord still didn't work. I was disappointed and decided to throw the whole cord away. So I took out the light bulb to salvage it at least. Before I put the light bulb away, I decided that I should test it. When I did, I found that the bulb was bad. I put a new bulb in the "bad" light cord and found that it worked. Then I realized that the old plug was probably OK after all. I just needed a new bulb. That was a stupid waste of time. Next time I'll check the bulb first.
Next I made a platform out of a bunch of pressure treated 4x4s that spanned from the loft floor to the loft floor on the outside of the Grid C2 RPSL. That way I could reach the front side of the RPSL to work on it. I also rigged a 3/4 inch rope as a guard rail for the platform, and I hung tarps around the RPSL to keep the chips from falling down to the first floor and to keep them contained.
On Wednesday I planed and scraped the C2 RPSL where it wasn't already finished. About half of the top of it was done but the bottom wasn't. Then I planed and scraped two more wall logs in the Grid A1 to B1 area. Finally, I swept up the chips, took down the tarps, and vacuumed the floor and all the logs I was going to varnish.
On Thursday morning I varnished the Grid B purlin, the B2 PSL, the C2 RPSL, and the two wall logs. Then I went out in the woods to check on the sequoia trees. I found most of them but about half of them were dead. The ones that were still green were squished down by the snow and the plastic protective sleeves were also squished. I straightened each one up and cleared the debris around the trees. I'm glad that at least some of them made it through the winter. I hope that means that some of them will thrive.
I also took down the chicken wire and rebar I had set up to protect the little Doug Fir I had transplanted many years ago. That tree is now thriving and it grew about 14 inches last year. It is now about 5 feet tall. I'm happy about that. Hopefully a new crop of trees will replace the ones that the laminated root rot has killed over the years.
I left for home at 11:30 so I could be home for Andrew. He is on spring break.
