Construction Journal Entry Week of 6/21/09

6/23-25/09 I went up to the property for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.

I arrived at 12:45 and was soon met by Bert and Ernie as usual. It was a cool 60 degrees but there were still a lot of mosquitoes around. After moving in and having lunch, I went to work and rebuilt the top of the crane on the porch. I replaced the chain holding up the top of the boom with a rope. I drilled a hole through the end of the boom and ran the rope through the hole.

When the crane was ready, I drove the truck up to the cabin and used the crane to unload 6 sacks of mortar mix. The rebuilt crane worked fine, but it needs another small modification to work better yet. I'll do that later. I unloaded some other things from the truck while it was up there and then I backed it down with no trouble.

On Wednesday I got an early start and was chinking in the loft by 7 AM. Bert and Ernie came around during the process so I took time off to get them their biscuit treats and the usual hugs and pets.

By the time I stopped for lunch I had chinked the rest of the Grid E wall and had also done two seams on the Grid A wall. There are five seams on the Grid A wall so that left only three to go.

After lunch and a nap, I cleaned the logs around all the seams that were chinked and not yet cleaned. There was a brief shower in the afternoon which cooled things off a little. It was comfortable working in the loft.

On Thursday morning, I chinked two and a half seams on the Grid A wall before it was time to quit for the week. That leaves just a half a seam to do in the loft and a few seams down on the first floor. The end of chinking is in sight. I left for home at 1:15.
