Construction Journal Entry Week of 2/28/10

3/2-5/10 I went up to Camp Serendipity for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.

I arrived at 12:35. It was a very pleasant 50 degree spring day with no new snow on the ground. Bert and Ernie met me for hugs and biscuits right away.

After moving in, having lunch and a short nap, I went to work and cleaned up the porch. It was about ankle deep in chips from making all the stair treads. I swept and scooped them up and filled 13 half-gallon buckets. I'll spread them over the trails as soon as I can get into the woods.

I also called three plumbers in Wenatchee and asked that they call me back so I could arrange for them to come up and give me bids on the waste water plumbing job.

On Wednesday morning I awoke to rain. I had been planning on putting the metal roof on the woodshed so that I could get the metal parts out of the woodshed where they are stored. I figured that would give me room to store things that are now in the crawlspace, thus clearing the crawlspace so the plumbers can work in there. But since it was raining, I canceled, or postponed those plans.

Before I went out the door, Dennis Peet, one of the plumbers I had called, returned my call. He said he would come up on Thursday morning and give me a bid.

I went up to the cabin, built a fire in the stove, and then went to work cleaning the crawlspace. Rather than taking things out and storing them in the woodshed, I just rearranged them. Since all the plumbing will be located in the North corner, I just moved the things that were there somewhere else. Then I made tags out of blue tape and hung them from the joists marking where the drain pipes need to come down.

Steve Harnack of After Hours Plumbing returned my call. He said that he didn’t do new construction but he was interested in my project and he gave me a lot of useful information and advice. He recommended three other plumbers to me.

After lunch, I went back to work cleaning out the crawlspace. Bert and Ernie also showed up so I took a break to give them hugs and dog biscuits. Before I went in for the night, I laid a fire in the stove so that it would be ready to light in the morning. I wanted to get the place warmed up before Dennis Peet showed up in the morning.

On Thursday morning, I went up to the cabin and got the fire started in the stove. Bert and Ernie showed up right away for their treats. Dennis Peet showed up about 9:45 and we spent the morning talking about the plumbing job and looking over the log home project. Dennis cleared up a lot of questions and concerns I had and at one point I thought that I might even want to do the job myself. But then I changed my mind again. There are more plusses than minuses in having a contractor do the waste water plumbing.

Dennis left me with a proposal to install the inside wastewater plumbing and the tub and shower stall and get it inspected. I would provide access to the drain line outside the building so it could be capped off for a pressure test. I would also install the vent stack on the outside of the building going up the gable wall and turning under the eaves and then up above the roof on the outside of the fascia board. I didn’t want any holes in the roof and this solution achieves that. I would also cut the holes in the log wall for the vent pipes to go through. And I would also install the line from the house to the septic tank.

After Dennis left, I called the three plumbers Steve Harnack had recommended and left them messages to call me. They are Rob at Ridgeview Plumbing, Freedom Plumbing, and Cashmere Valley Plumbing. I left for home at 2:00 feeling like I am finally making some progress on the plumbing project.

3/5/10 (Friday) Sam from Cashmere Valley Plumbing called and arranged to come to Camp Serendipity next Tuesday afternoon, 3/9/10, to give me a proposal on the plumbing job..
