Construction Journal Entry Week of 8/29/10

8/31-9/2/10 I went up to Camp Serendipity for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.

I got an early start and arrived at 10:30. Bert and Ernie were right there to greet me and the flock of four gray jays showed up soon after. There was a light rain when I arrived but it stopped after a while. It stayed nice and cool. I carried some material up to the cabin that I had brought with me and I did some puttering around. Then I went down for lunch and a short nap.

The rain had stopped, so just for fun, I swept off the concrete stairs. Then I went to work and cut the hole in the Grid 1 log wall for the utility room ventilation fan. The gray jays visited me quite a few times for peanuts and the chipmunk even showed up a couple times. I haven’t seen any chipmunks around the front porch since I put the rodent repellers out there, but this guy showed up on the back porch. I think it is out of range of the repellers and the chipmunks feel at ease back there. It was good to see the little guy again.

By the end of the day, I had installed the utility room fan in the joists, the 4” stovepipe through the wall, and the cap on the outside.

On Wednesday, the gray jays came around before I had finished breakfast. I fed them several times outside the trailer door. Then I went to work and finished up the installation of the electrical wiring and switch, on circuit 2, for the fan. I felt good about getting that job done.

The gray jays and the chipmunk came around for peanuts every time I went out the back door.

After lunch, I replaced the first receptacle in the utility room string, circuit 11, with a GFCI receptacle. Since there will be water in that room for the washing machine, I think a GFCI protected circuit is required in there.

Then I installed the cables for the kitchen range, circuit 30, the crawl space receptacles, circuit 14, a 240v receptacle for the crawl space, circuit 26, and a wire for the hood over the kitchen range, part of circuit 10.

On Thursday morning, I finished up connecting the cables I had run up to the distribution panel and installed the breakers. Then I mounted box 44 on the concrete wall in the crawl space and installed the 120v receptacles in the box. I’ll add two more receptacle boxes to this string later on.

I coiled up the cables for the range and the 240v receptacle and tucked the coils up in the floor joists. Likewise, I coiled up the wire for the kitchen hood and tucked it up in the kitchen ceiling joists. I probably won’t install any more on those circuits until after I get the next electrical inspection. I want the inspection soon so I can insulate the ceiling and the wiring for the range can wait until the cabinets are installed.

The gray jays came around for peanuts all morning and the chipmunk showed up in the back again. I’m glad they did because I want them to come around when the scouts come up in a couple weeks. I swept up all the wood chip mess, which I hope is the end of it for a while, and I got a start at putting away tools and material. I left for home at 1:45.
