8/17-19/10 I went up to Camp Serendipity for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.
I stopped at Priscilla’s on the way up and made a couple repairs for her. I arrived at Camp Serendipity at 12:30. Bert and Ernie were soon there to greet me but instead of begging for biscuits right away, they headed for the creek and lay down in it to cool off while gulping down a lot of water.
After moving in, having lunch, and a short nap, I carried some stuff up to the cabin including a bathroom mirror and medicine cabinet. We had gotten this on 1/12/92 from Will Vasquez and I brought it up to see whether it would work. It fits between two studs, but the plumbers had run a vent pipe part-way between the studs where the cabinet should go.
I temporarily hung the cabinet above the pipes, which is only about 6 inches too high, and I could see that it will be easy to reconfigure the pipes to lower them and install the cabinet at the proper height. All I would need would be three ABS unions and some glue.
It is interesting to see that mirror hanging there because it is almost exactly centered in the building and you can still see through the stud walls. When you look at it, it reflects the log walls behind you and they blend in almost seamlessly with the log walls in front of you. Even the reflection of the bathroom window lines up with the view of the bedroom window. It’s really an interesting effect. I’ll have to take some pictures of it.
I spent the rest of the day working on the wiring of the utility room heater. I had some questions about exactly how to plug the wires into the Convectair receptacle so I called Brian and left a message. He called me back while I was in the shower, but it was no problem to step out on the bathmat and answer the phone. He answered my questions.
During the night I felt like I was getting a relapse of my cold, so I took night-time cold medicine. By the morning, Wednesday, I felt a little better but I still felt sick.
I finished installing the utility room heater, energizing it, and testing it. It looks nice and I am happy with it.
Still feeling crummy, I plodded on and by the end of the day, I had installed and tested the bathroom and bedroom heaters. Since the bedroom heater will hang on a sheetrock wall (all the rest are on log walls), I mounted it with half-inch wood spacers which will temporarily take the place of the sheetrock. I’ll simply remove them when it comes time to do the drywall.
I took a nice shower and went in for the night still feeling sick.
On Thursday morning, I brought a bucket of water with some Superthrive high-power fertilizer up and watered Bill and Andrew. All the sequoia trees look like they are thriving but Bill and Andrew look like they could use a little help.
I was feeling quite a bit better which I appreciated. My ears were nice and clear so I didn’t expect any trouble getting over the mountains. I planned to use Dristan anyway as an extra precaution.
Before I quit for the week, I strung the last two MC cables for the last two heaters, both in the living room. I left for home at 1:30 happy with my progress for the week.
