Construction Journal Entry Week of 5/19/13

5/21-23/13 I went up to Camp Serendipity for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.

Ellen and I agreed that I would not have to bring Qdog with me after all. That simplified things. I still had a lingering cold and I had seen the doctor. I got a prescription for antibiotics in case it didn't clear up in the next few days. I stopped in and visited with Uncle Charles for a short time anyway. I arrived at Camp Serendipity at 1:15.

It was a little chilly so I started a fire in the wood stove. Then I had my lunch and a nap. Afterward I took the trapper Nelson backpack down to the truck and loaded a 50 lb. salt block into it. I carried the block up to the drainfield area where the old salt lick was almost gone. The deer are now set for the summer and then some.

Since it was not raining, I spent the rest of the afternoon building a rack over the sewer pipe run and started loading it up with logs from under the eaves in the front of the cabin. I got six logs moved up onto the rack before I quit for the night. I took a picture of the rack and the logs.

On Wednesday morning it was raining cats and dogs. I decided to work on an inside project as long as the weather was bad. I spent the morning hanging the bedroom door.

After lunch and a nap, I started hanging the entry room door, but at about 2:30 the rain stopped and the sun came out. I took advantage of that break and went into the woods and fertilized the giant sequoia named John. Then I went back to work on the entry room door and finished hanging it.

On Thursday morning, the weather was clear again so I went into the woods and fertilized the giant sequoia named Earl. The rain had sufficiently watered all the trees except for Brian so I went back, turned on the water, and gave Brian a good watering. The diversion ditch I had dug for Brian seemed to work OK, but there evidently had not been enough runoff with the recent rains to get much water down to the tree.

After that, I moved three more logs up to the rack and then swept the back porch and stoop.

I took a picture of the two doors I had just hung. Then I saw a Canadian Jay fly past the window so I took some peanuts out to the front porch and had two Canadian Jays take peanuts from my hand. I don't see them much anymore and I miss them. It was good seeing this pair again. I left at 11:00 so that I could get to Marilyn's and have lunch with her at noon. I also wanted to get home early so that I could get my prescription filled.
