Construction Journal Entry Week of 9/8/13

9/10-11/13 I went up to Camp Serendipity for 2 days: Tuesday and Wednesday.

After dropping Tianna off at school, I proceeded on to visit Priscilla in the Anderson House rehab facility. From there I proceeded on to Monroe where I visited with Uncle Charles.

I arrived at Camp Serendipity at 12:30 and was delighted to find no mice in the traps. After having my lunch and a nap, I removed three doors-- entry, hall closet, and bedroom—from their hinges and took them out on the porch where I sanded them with my vibrating "Mouse" sander.

During one of my trips through the front door, I caught a glimpse of a critter just inside the front door that I thought must be a mouse. I began to wonder why it had been able to avoid the traps and I tried to think of ways to catch it.

A little while later the critter made a run for it across the floor and it went into the bathroom. This time I could clearly see that it was a small brown lizard. I got a yogurt container and caught the little guy. I took him outside and took a picture of him before he darted away.

I stood the three doors up on the porch and leaned them against posts and the log wall. Then I varnished the three of them.

On Wednesday morning, I sanded and then varnished the three jambs before replacing the doors on their hinges. Then I removed the bathroom doorknob, took the door off its hinges, and carried it out to the front porch. Next I varnished the bathroom door jambs. I went back out on the porch and sanded the bathroom door. Then I brought it back in, hung it on its hinges, and finally varnished it.

With four of the seven interior doors now having their second coat of varnish, I switched my attention to the flagpole that the scouts are planning to erect when they come up for their planning session at the end of next week. Paul Hendricks, the scoutmaster, had selected a log for the flagpole so I set to work with a scraper and Rasputin and cleaned off two feet of the butt end of the log. Then I brushed on a thick coat of Allweather end coat stain as a preservative.

Finally I replaced the bathroom door knob, had my lunch, and left for home at 2:00. This was a short week because of an appointment I had scheduled for the next day. I did get some work done though.
