Construction Journal Entry Week of 7/14/24

7/15-19/24 I went up to Camp Serendipity for five days: Monday through Friday.

I arrived at 12:30 and the temperature was a hot 82 degrees. Inside the cabin the temperature was 77 and it was only going to get hotter. I brought my gear up in one trip, hoisted the flag, had my lunch and a short nap. When I got up, I walked to the grave and had a short conversation with Frank Scoggins who had just finished mowing his grass.

On Tuesday morning, the temperature inside the cabin was 64 degrees because I had left all the windows open all night with a fan running all night. I listened to the radio and then walked to the grave. I had my lunch and a nap and then went outside and laid up stones in the wall. It was pretty hot work since the temperature outside was 90 degrees and part of my work area was in direct sun.

On Wednesday, after Ellen's suggestion, I decided to do my stonework in the cool of the morning. The temperature inside the cabin was 65 degrees and it was even cooler outside. I got an early start and was outside working on the stone wall by 7:00. I had used up two batches of mortar by noon. Those were batch numbers 60 and 61. I worked in the shade the whole time.

After lunch and a nap, I walked to the grave. It was hot but it was easier to walk than to do stone masonry in the heat. I practiced the piano when I got back.

On Thursday morning I decided to use my new routine in the hot weather from now on, so I was outside working on the wall at 8:00. Again, I was able to lay up two batches worth of mortar, batches #62 and 63, by noon.

After lunch and a nap, I walked to the grave in 90 degree heat. I practiced the piano when I got back.

On Friday morning I finally put away the cot and the bedding that was on it. Then I went for a walk and turned around at the Smith's house. Workmen were putting on a new roof. When I got back, I practiced the piano for a while, had a short nap, and then I had my lunch. I left for home at 12:45 happy with the progress I made using my new work schedule.
