Construction Journal Entry Week of 12/15/24

12/16-20/24 I went up to Camp Serendipity for five days: Monday through Friday.

I had to stop at the post office, the drugstore, Marilyn's, and make a bunch of deliveries. I also stopped at the Ranger Station and the rest stop before I made the Christmas jam deliveries. Because of the snow, I walked up the hill to Byron and Barb's rather than drive up.

I arrived at Camp Serendipity at 1:00. I brought my gear up in one trip over 4 inches of new snow on the ground. I hoisted the flag, then had my lunch and a nap. I built a small fire in the stove and practiced the piano.

On Tuesday morning it was 25 degrees and snowing outside. I practiced the piano, listened to the radio, and then walked to the grave over about two inches of new snow. Then I had my lunch and a nap and then practiced the piano. Ellen called me with instructions for how to take pictures for insurance purposes.

On Wednesday morning I woke up to about one foot of new snow and there was freezing rain forming a crust of ice on top. I practiced the piano and I could hear a huge downpour on the roof as I was practicing. The downpour only lasted a few minutes. I listened to the radio and then watered the two plants. Then I bit the bullet and went to work taking the pictures for the insurance. I did the inside ones first and by that time the rain outside had diminished somewhat so I got a little bit wet taking the outside pictures.

I was pretty sure I was snowed in so I called Josh to make sure my driveway would get plowed. I had to call Mike to get a new telephone number for Josh. He assured me he would be over to plow it.

I wanted to take a walk but since I needed to post-hole through the deep snow and ice to the road, I decided against carrying my backpack full of rocks. I walked to the one-mile marker and turned around. I saw John in his truck on the way back and stopped and talked with him. He told me that he hadn't gotten a downpour like I had.

After lunch and a nap, I worked on replacing a part on the vacuum cleaner with a part I had salvaged from an identical vacuum cleaner in Seattle. I didn't figure out how to do it without breaking something.

While I was working on the vacuum cleaner, I saw a red pickup outfitted with a snowplow drive in my driveway and clear the parking area of snow. I had no idea who it was. I took a video hoping that would help identify who was plowing my driveway. Then I gave up on the vacuum cleaners. I had glued the old one and it was holding fine so I figured there's no point in fixing it if it isn't broken, so I kept the spare part in case the old one does break.

Then I practiced the piano and went outside and walked another mile. On the way back I brought a load of firewood to the porch. Then I practiced the piano some more.

On Thursday morning the temperature was 25 degrees outside and there was no new snow. I practiced the piano, listened to the radio, and then walked to the grave. On the way I stopped and talked with Karen Arnold and showed her the pictures of the mystery snow plower hoping she could identify him. She had no idea who it was.

When I got back to the cabin, I called Josh and learned that he was the guy who had plowed my driveway. I wasn't sure I could back through the snow and get to the area he had plowed without getting stuck, but I told him I would give it a try. I had my lunch and then went outside and backed the truck through the deep snow down to where the parking area was cleared with no problem. Then I went back to the cabin, called Josh and told him I was free, and he needn't come and help get me unstuck. Then I had my nap and practiced the piano. Next, I filled and staged the water jugs.

On Friday morning the temperature outside was 25 degrees again. I practiced the piano, listened to the radio, and loaded all of the jugs into the truck. I left for home at 12:20 after a fun and delightful week.
