Construction Journal Entry Week of 5/12/13

5/14-16/13 I went up to Camp Serendipity for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.

On the way I stopped at Priscilla's to deliver some items to her. While I was there, I talked with her gardener and we figured out where her water leak seems to be. I skipped visiting Uncle Charles because I felt like I was coming down with another cold.

I arrived at Camp Serendipity at 1:00. Bert and Ernie were there to greet me but by the time I unloaded the two pressure-treated 6x6s and the yard waste that I had brought with me, they lost interest and went back home without getting their usual biscuits.

Before I had my lunch and a nap, I loaded up Dave's bird feeder with safflower seeds that I had bought. Steller's Jays don't like them so the other birds may have a chance. We'll see.

After my nap, I went down to the driveway with the Warthog and a post-hole digger and planted the two 6x6s in the ground to serve as the two new gate posts.

When I went in for the night, I noticed a lot of carpenter ant activity outside. I had set some bait traps outside but they didn't seem to be in the right places. They also seemed to be old and dried out. I moved some of them and dug around inside to loosen up the bait and set them out again. Some of the ants seemed to be interested. I think I better get some new fresh bait.

When Ellen called, she told me that Quincy had gotten upset from some loud noises and had crawled out through a hole he had chewed in the bottom of the gate. After discussing the problem, we agreed that I might have to bring him up to Camp Serendipity with me next week so that he won't be left alone. He is getting very old and we will probably have to start watching him more closely. We agreed that he should sleep in the utility room and that I should hang the utility room door before next week.

On Wednesday I started out by fertilizing the giant sequoia named Chuck. I skipped watering the other trees, except for Brian, because it had evidently rained a lot recently and the ground was plenty damp. Brian is sheltered under the canopy of a huge tree so it doesn't get enough water. After giving Brian a couple gallons of water, I went back to the cabin, got a shovel, and dug a trench to divert runoff water from the hillside down to Brian. I hope that makes a difference.

I spent the rest of the morning building the new gate and bringing all the tools back up to the cabin. After lunch and a nap, I started hanging the utility room door. It was nearly completed by the time I quit for the day.

On Thursday morning, I started out by wasting a considerable amount of time working on a geometry problem just for fun. Then I went outside and fertilized the sequoia named Larry. Finally, I finished hanging the utility room door and cleaned up the mess. I left for home at 12:45.
