Construction Journal Entry Week of 8/25/24

8/26-30/24 I went up to Camp Serendipity for five days: Monday through Friday.

I arrived at 12:15 and brought my gear up in two trips. I hoisted the flag and then had my lunch and a nap. When I got up, I walked to the grave. The temperature was a cool 65 degrees.

On Tuesday morning the weather continued to cool. It was 50 degrees outside when I went to work at 7:30. I wheeled 1 sack of mortar-mix up to the cabin and then I went to work clearing boards and debris from the foundation wall around the Grid E3 corner. It was a mess of old boards and packrat debris. I exposed about half of the foundation ledge after a lot of work.

After lunch and a nap, I walked to the grave. I stopped and talked with John and Abby. He had four A-frames erected but told me the sad story of measuring badly on half a dozen more which had to be dismantled and destroyed.

On Wednesday morning the weather was cold; the temperature was 36 degrees when I got up. I was out to work at 7:30 and laid up two batches worth of stones around the Grid E3 corner.

After lunch and a nap, I walked to the grave and on the way talked to John and Abby for a short time. I also met a couple in a car who were very friendly. I gave them my business card and an invitation to visit my cabin. Her name was Melissa, and I think his name was Bill, but I didn't catch their last name.

Back at the cabin I had some time to practice the piano.

On Thursday morning the temperature was 36 degrees. I was up at 5 and out to work at 7:30. I sprayed rodent repellent in the airspace along the entire wall that I had built. Then I went up to the quarry and harvested some fairly big stones. I laid them up in the wall using one batch of mortar which was batch #91. One of the stones was big enough that I used a skyhook and come-along to lift and place it. After lunch I watered the plants and then took my nap. When I got up, I walked to the grave and didn't meet anyone on the way.

On Friday morning I practiced the piano and then tried changing a flood-light bulb using the long-handled bulb changer, but it didn't work because there was too much of an angle. I left the bulb unchanged. Then I walked to the grave and had my lunch when I returned. I left for home at 12:45 after a reasonably productive week. I felt strong and happy.
