Construction Journal Entry Week of 9/21/25

9/22-26/25 I went up to Camp Serendipity for 5 days: Monday through Friday.

I left late, 4:30 PM, after getting the truck back from the garage. I arrived at Camp Serendipity at 6:30 which left me enough time to make two trips up to the cabin with my gear, hoisting the flag in between, and then unpacking, having dinner, and going to bed.

On Tuesday morning, I was up at 5:00. It was a little chilly, so I set the thermostats up to 69 degrees for the season and I switched the ventilation fan from summer to winter mode.

After breakfast, I went out and wheeled one sack of mortar mix from the truck up to the back stoop. Then I harvested a load of stones, washed them, and laid them up into the wall using two batches of mortar: #170 and #171.

After going in for lunch and a nap, I walked to the grave. When I returned, I filled and staged 12 water jugs.

On Wednesday morning, I harvested more stones and laid them up into the wall using batch #172. Then I went in for lunch and a nap and then walked to the grave.

On Thursday morning, I fertilized Tiger and then had my breakfast. Then I loaded the water jugs into the truck requiring three trips up and down the hill with the Trapper Nelson backpack. Next, I harvested stones and laid up batch #173. After lunch and a nap, I walked to the grave.

On Friday morning, while I was eating breakfast and looking out the window, I saw a pick-up slowly drive up the road past the cabin. Then I could see that the truck was being followed by a big flock of sheep. I learned later that there were 800 sheep in the flock. Following a way behind the sheep were 4 or 5 dogs, then a sheepherder, and another pick-up. Of course, I wondered where they were going.

I went to work on the wall and laid up batch #174. Then I walked to the grave, gingerly stepping around the thick deposits of sheep poop. There was no doubt where the sheep had gone, but the question remained open because the poop continued past the grave, where I turned around. On the way, I met Ida Leroy who was walking her pup named Cole. She said it was short for Coleridge. It was she who told me the sheep count.

When I got back, I had an early lunch, packed up, and left at 12:10. I needed to leave a little early to make an appointment at Costco to get new tires for the truck. I made the appointment with time to spare and got the tires.
