Construction Journal Entry Week of 10/19/14

10/21-23/14 I went up to Camp Serendipity for 3 days: Tuesday through Thursday.

On the way I stopped to visit with Priscilla and to deliver some stuff, but I was too early and she was not awake. I left the stuff with the receptionist and proceeded on to Monroe where I visited with Uncle Charles. From there, I proceeded on to Coles Corner where I planned to meet Bob and Pat Burton at the 59'er Diner for lunch. I arrived first so I got a table and waited for them.

We had a nice visit over lunch and then we all went to Camp Serendipity so they could see the latest developments and the fall foliage on the way. Dave had been up to the cabin on Sunday and while he was there he split a bunch of firewood for me. I was very happy and impressed by the big stack of wood I saw when I went up to the cabin. I was also happy that there were no mice in the traps.

Bob and Pat looked over the cabin and heard a few stories from me about how things had gotten done. They left at about 1:30. I took a couple pictures of them before they left.

Since the weather was fairly nice with the temperature about 55º I decided to varnish a bunch of ceiling boards. I really didn't want to move the varnishing operation back inside the cabin like it was last year so I decided to do it outside whenever the weather is nice. It is supposed to be above 60º in order to varnish but I figured it would be OK at 55º. I varnished a full rack of 23 boards before I quit for the day.

On Wednesday it rained cats and dogs all day and the loggers didn't plan to be there. I decided to relax and just do some odd jobs inside the cabin. I also spent a lot of time goofing off working on a jigsaw puzzle that Dave had gotten out and made a good start on.

I decided that it would be nice to have smooth, handy switches on two lamps: one in the bedroom and the other in the dining room. The switch on the bedroom lamp is high on the lamp and very hard to turn. It has been a source of irritation for me ever since I started sleeping in the bedroom. I wanted a handier switch on the wall that I could easily reach while I am in bed. The lamp in the dining room has no switch and has to be plugged in and unplugged to turn it on and off.

I planned to wire up a couple of electrical boxes with receptacles and switches so I went through my electrical equipment and found some of the parts I would need. Then I wrote down a list of the remaining parts I would have to buy.

Next I went to work on the cabinet over the toilet and finished installing the anti-topple restraint bracket. Then I made some progress on the puzzle before lunch.

After lunch, I went up to the loft and installed the guy wires for the chimney stack. That is one of the jobs that needed to be done while the scaffold was still there. I also finished caulking for a stretch of the new ceiling up against the ridgepole. Then I measured for one of the boards I need to rip to fill in part of the remaining space between the ceiling and the ridgepole.

On Thursday morning it was still raining cats and dogs. I got to thinking about the lamp switches I was going to make and it dawned on me that I had a few power strips that already had a switch and outlets just like I wanted. So I got two of them out and installed them on the log walls in the bedroom and dining room. The lamps are now switched by them and it will be a lot more convenient from now on. I spent the rest of the morning relaxing and making more progress on the jigsaw puzzle. It's a good thing I'm the boss so I can't get into too much trouble for goofing off. It ended up being a very pleasant relaxing week.
