2/27-3/3/23 I went up to Camp Serendipity for five days: Monday through Friday.
The road over the pass had compact snow and slush but it was plenty safe. I arrived at 12:15 and found 8 inches of new loose snow on the ground that had not been plowed. I had no trouble parking. I brought my gear up in two trips with no shoveling. The snow was light and fluffy enough, so the stairs were plenty safe. The temperature outside was 22 degrees.
I hoisted the flag, built a fire in the wood stove, and had my lunch and a nap. When I got up I cleaned up the paint thinner that had accumulated on the shelf again. I had guessed wrong about the source of the paint thinner. Now I could see it had to be either the one-gallon metal can or the one-gallon plastic jug that was leaking. I took them both outside and set them on a board so I could see which one was leaking.
On Tuesday the temperature outside was 26 degrees when I got up. I practiced the piano, listened to the radio, and then went back to clean up paint thinner. I learned it was the metal can that was leaking so I poured the contents into glass jars to empty the can. Then I wiped up the shelf with a rag.
After lunch and a nap, I went outside and hiked up to the privy so I could inspect some animal tracks in the snow. The tracks weren't very distinct in that fluffy snow so all I had to go on was the length of the stride. I figured it was either a bobcat or a big rabbit. Then I got the scoop and shoveled off the concrete steps. I spent the rest of the afternoon reading.
On Wednesday morning the temperature outside was 10 degrees when I got up. I practiced the piano and then called Robert just to chat. Then I did some serious reading.
After lunch and a nap, I went outside and walked for one hour. When I got back, I spent the rest of the day reading.
On Thursday morning the temperature outside was 25 degrees. I practiced the piano and then went outside and spent an hour walking to the bridge and back. On the way Roxy followed me and I had several opportunities to pet her.
I had my lunch and then took my nap. When I got up, the power had gone out. It was a bright sunny day, so I spent some time reading by natural light. By three o'clock I figured I'd better build a fire in the stove in case the power didn't come on soon. when it came time for dinner, I made a big salad and then heated up some leftover meat on the wood stove. The power came back on at 6:00 o'clock.
On Friday morning the temperature outside was 25 degrees and it was snowing. I practiced the piano and then Ellen called giving me an update on the pass conditions. She told me there was a planned avalanche control closure that would happen between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM. I would not be there by that time, so it seemed to be no problem. I left for home at 12:20 and had no problem getting over the pass. It was another fun week, and I was happy to be feeling healthy.
