Construction Journal Entry Week of 9/22/24

9/23-27/24 I went up to Camp Serendipity for five days: Monday through Friday.

I arrived at 1:00 and brought my gear up in one trip. I hoisted the flag and then had my lunch. Next, I walked to the grave and briefly talked with Larry Ann and her dog Bodhi. I saw a helicopter fly overhead hauling a bucket of water so there must be a fire somewhere. There was no sign of smoke, however.

On Tuesday morning I was out to work at 9:00. I wheeled one sack of mortar up from the truck to the cabin. Then I harvested and washed some gneiss stones. I laid a batch of them in the wall under the front porch using batch #102.

After lunch and a nap, I walked to the grave. Byron and Barb passed me in a hurry, but they looked OK. I was glad to see that. There were more helicopters in the sky but no sign of smoke. When I got back, I practiced the piano.

On Wednesday morning I laid up a batch worth of stones using batch #103. Then I went into the woods and checked the trees. They all looked OK. After lunch and a nap, it started to rain but not very hard. I walked to the grave and went in and tried to see John, but he didn't respond. I thought maybe he was taking a nap in his trailer. I was surprised to see his A-frame was completely covered so it's protected from the rain. I took some pictures of it.

Just as I was leaving John's driveway, Byron and Barb came by and stopped and talked. I was pleased to learn that they are both doing well. They told me their shed is up to the second level and is getting big.

On Thursday morning Robert called with the news that Dennis, one of Robert"s helpers who logged our place, had died. He fought blood cancer for quite a while. He also told me that Tess had won an award for being the best business in Cashmere. They gave her a nice award and ceremony.

I went out to work and laid up stones using batch #104. After lunch and a nap, I walked to the grave and went in and talked with John. When I got back, I cut the Big Leaf Maple that was growing from suckers by the septic tank. They had really gotten overgrown, and I had neglected it for too long, but I cut it back down to the stump. Next, I filled and staged 8 jugs of water in the entry room.

On Friday I practiced the piano and then loaded the jugs into the truck. Then I walked to the grave and had my lunch. I left for home at 1:00 pleased with the fun I had and the work I got done this week.
