Construction Journal Entry Week of 2/22/26

2/23-27/26 I went up to Camp Serendipity for 5 days: Monday through Friday.

I arrived at 12:30 and found about 1 inch of new snow on the ground. I had gotten a message from Dave telling me that he would be up to Camp Serendipity for a visit the next day, so I decided to park back in the corner of the parking lot to give Dave the maximum amount of room to park wherever he wanted. I figured he would be wearing ordinary street shoes, and I was wondering how they would work in the new layer of snow. I walked to the cabin in my street shoes from where I had parked with no problem.

After making that initial trip to the cabin with all my gear, I walked back down to the flagpole and hoisted the flag.

Next, I had my lunch, took a shower, did some exercises, vacuumed the place, fixed my dinner, and then practiced the piano.

On Tuesday morning the temperature outside was 24 degrees when I got up. Since I was expecting Dave later in the morning, I got an early start on my walk to the grave. On the way, I talked to John and his brother Nate who were driving by.

Back in the cabin, I was practicing the piano when Dave called and told me that his trip was canceled and he wouldn't be showing up after all. Of course that changed my plans for the day.

I finished my piano practice and then worked on the puzzle for a while. Then, after lunch and a nap, I went outside and hauled firewood up the hill. Then I had an early dinner so that I would be finished in time to listen to the State of the Union on the radio. Ellen called early so that our conversation wouldn't interfere with the SOTU.

On Wednesday morning, the temperature was 29 degrees. That meant it would be thawing during the day and maybe shrink the snow a little.

I practiced the piano, hauled some firewood, had my lunch and a nap and then walked to the grave. This time I talked to Barb when she stopped. When I got back to the cabin, I read the news headlines that I had downloaded on my walk.

On Thursday morning the temperature outside was 32 degrees so the snow on the ground was already thawing. It seems more like spring than winter, not like the rest of the country. After practicing the piano, I watered Tiger and then hauled firewood. After lunch and a nap, I walked to the grave and talked with Karen Arnold when she stopped to chat. When I got back, I caught up on the news headlines.

On Friday morning, the temperature was 35 degrees. It was windy but sunny outside. After practicing the piano, I was just about to start my lunch when the doorbell rang. It was John, his dog Abby, and his brother Nate. They had come just so that Nate could see the cabin and some of its unique features.

We did a fairly complete tour of the place, in particular we climbed up on the high rock behind the cabin so that Nate could see the cliff behind the outcrop. That had particularly impressed John, and he wanted his brother to see it. Inside the cabin, we toured the loft and we inspected all the rooms. Nate noticed, and remarked on, features like the wooden faucet in the kitchen. I explained the consequences of living with 10 lb. of water pressure.

After the visitors left, I packed up my gear, finished my lunch and headed home at 12:30. It had been another fun week with expected visitors who didn't show up, and unexpected visitors who did.
