9/28/17 The mystery of the broken upper window in the living room is solved, at least there is a strong theory. The second crack, the short one near the bottom angling up to the right, appeared along with the evidence of bird feathers still stuck to the window and the body of a headless, dead grouse on the roadway below. It is pretty clear that the window was broken as a result of bird strikes. I'll begin thinking of ways of mitigating that problem.
9/28/17 On the subject of animal control, a new priority has been established. I will put the railing projects on hold while I seal the first floor of the cabin against animals coming up from the crawl space. There are two possible ways through the subfloor: one is through holes made for plumbing, and the other is around the perimeter of the floor. The plumbing holes were plugged this week using hardware cloth. The perimeter will be plugged by installing 2x4s as baseboards all the way around. To seat the baseboards tightly against the wall logs, a notch will be cut in the logs to receive the 2x4s. To make the horizontal cut for the notch, the Skilsaw mounted in the carriage shown in the picture will be used. The Bosch bulldog roto-hammer fitted with a wood chisel bit will be used to cut away the rest of the notch below the kerf.
9/28/17 Here you see the Skilsaw in its carriage in the cutting position resting on the floor.
10/12/17 The baseboard from Grid E2.5 to E3 is finished. It makes that section mouseproof. In the center of the picture is the big wall-hung heater and on the left is the remote valve control mechanism.
10/19/17 The two baseboards from Grid B3 to D3 are installed but they still need to be varnished. Those sections are now mouseproof, so the varnish can wait until the entire floor is sealed against mice.
10/19/17 The notch for the baseboard from Grid D3 to E3 is cut. The short pieces of 2x4 you see are simply gauges I use to make sure the notch is cut right. Next week, I'll make and install this section of the baseboard.
10/19/17 This is the bulldog roto-hammer equipped with a wood chisel bit that I use to chisel out the notch in the wall log after the kerf is cut.
11/3/17 This was a special day, not because of anything to do with log home building, but because I finished assembling a 5040-piece jigsaw puzzle. I worked on it in my spare time during the evenings for just over a year.
11/3/17 Here's a view from the other side.
11/15/17 And here it is hanging on the wall.
12/27/17 Ellen, up to the cabin for an overnighter, relaxing and knitting in front of a winter scene.
12/27/17 Another view of Ellen knitting.
12/27/17 Ellen in the kitchen preparing dinner.
12/27/17 Paul showing his firewood hauling device. The nails in the ends of the 2x4 legs will be driven into the center of the firewood round to form an axle. Then the round will be rolled out of the woods by pulling on the big rope. Hopefully the firewood round will roll nicely. We'll see.
